Chipper

During my time at Chipper, a fintech startup focused on loan repayment solutions, we underwent a significant business pivot to better address the needs of our users. Following this strategic shift, I redesigned the entire mobile app, building upon and enhancing the existing design system and created designs for five distinctive features, along with a fully polished marketing website to showcase our app to potential users and investors.

GOAL

Pivot Chipper’s student loan based product into a general debt management platform

The Pivot

Chipper recognized that the student loan market was highly unstable and dependent on government policy, leading to unreliable student loan services and a poor user experience.

To address this issue, Chipper decided to diversify its offerings while still targeting the same predefined market. This pivot aimed to augment Chipper’s value proposition, ensuring greater resilience and robustness in its utility offerings

Then we started researching and interviewing

We conducted interviews with five current users to gain deeper insights into their experiences and expectations.

During the interviews, we discussed the current app in detail, focusing on its features and functionality. We explored what users want to see in future updates and how we can enhance their experience. Additionally, we talked about the concept of all-purpose apps and gathered insights on their opinions regarding the benefits and potential drawbacks of such comprehensive solutions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Users usually have no time to educate themselves and manually track ALL of their debts

  • Excited about ability to manage and pay all types of debts

  • Users wish the app updated them faster about student loan forgiveness enrollment (communication)

  • Prefers more customization over less

  • Not especially interested in content, more focused on utility

What are we trying to solve?

generate

How can users use chipper as a general-purpose solution to ALL of their debts?

Ideation & Initial Concepts

  • at first, the platform was geared towards only student loan repayment and relevant info in the space.

  • we needed to educate customers on varying types of loans, as well as different repayment schedules, and other loan repayment technicalities to provide a more generalized solution to debt.

  • offer different repayment strategies and help the user understand the differences

  • in short, the design problem evolved to that of something very niche to a hyper-generalized problem that has to apply to a more varied userbase.

  • initial concepts for the app:

    • users can select a strategy of loan repayment so that chipper can advise the order and manner in which they will repay their collection of debts

    • roundups: round up individual payments to '“force” the user to make extra payments to their debts. These extra payments allocate in accordance witht he predetermined strategy.

    • Had to create a better ui flow around our new external account authorization software, methodfi, to allow users to link and pay many debt accounts

    • had to understand user behavior to adapt their behavior to visit chipper to pay off ALL of their debts instead

    • features around prioiritization, allowing users to self-elect more pressing debts and allow them to take control of their finances.

Usability Testing & Decision

user interviews:

  • users are more confident understanding their different debt profiles

  • users are willing to log on to chipper on a regular basis to pay off ALL their debts from one platform

  • users are willing to use the roundups feature for more than just student debt

  • users find added value in tracking additional debts similar to how chipper used to track only student debt

  • users maintain their confidence and ability to maintain their student debts
